After learning my grandmother was very ill, and probably only had days to live, I made the drive down to Athens, Ga., to see her in the hospital earlier this week. Although frail at 92, she was still mentally sharp as a tack and irreverent as ever. It was such a gift to be able to see this remarkable woman one last time, and to be able to express how much she meant to me.

Today I got the call that she had died this afternoon. So this week’s Photo of the Week, taken from a much simpler and carefree time, is dedicated to Jaunita Peckham…what a woman!

While in Las Vegas shooting some photos for Roll Call on the political scene in Nevada, it turned out I needed to drive 7 hours through the scorching desert to Reno for an event. Everyone made it sound like it was going to be the most miserable drive, but it was hands down the most enjoyable road trip I’ve ever had. A few hours north of Vegas, I ran across this old cemetery in Goldfield, NV, and had to stop for some photos.
